This 4th of July many of us will be attending parades and other events to honor our day of Independence from the Crown, and to honor those who are and who have served this country and fought for freedom. During the Apple Festival Parade last year I was taking pictures of the honor guard, the men of the American Legion who were carrying the flags. When I got the photo home and onto the computer I noticed that not one person in the photo was saluting the flag or even acting like they cared that Old Glory was going by. Now admitted, I was taking photos of the flag, but I did remove my hat. When I was in grade school we were taught that when someone was carrying the flag that we were suppose to show respect and stand, take our hats off and cover our hearts. There is an entire book on flag etiquette that you can read. I don’t know if they are teaching respect for the United States and its symbols of freedom in this politically correct age.
So this July 4th, when that Flag and those men who fought for this country go by, be sure to show respect to those men and that Flag, especially sense I might be taking your picture doing it.
On another note I was down at Cassville and in their Post Office they have pictures of all the service men and women from there area who are serving in the armed forces. Wouldn’t it be nice if Seymour got together and did the same thing? I bet the postmaster wouldn’t mind putting them on display. We have several members of this community in the military and I know some of them personally who are in Iraq right now. We should have some sort of display to let people know who is paying for their freedom.
